Situated within  the historical Castle Hotel, District Six Backpackers is situated on the fringe of District Six and Cape Town City centre. The area District Six was named in 1867 as the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town. By the turn of the century it was already a lively community made up of former slaves, artisans, merchants and other immigrants, as well as many Malay people brought to South Africa by the Dutch East India Company. Situated within sight of the docks, it was and is made up largely of coloured residents, called Cape Malays.


As well as specializing in group bookings, we also have various options available for budget conscious travellers. Our 7 rooms offer Dorms and a private room en suites.  All our guests are offered a free welcome beverage upon arrival.  Free WiFi and a complimentary Sunrise breakfast are included in our rates. Our guests can make use of our Sugar Hut   lounge on the first floor, we have a licensed pub serving meals and a pool room. We also have our own on-site liquor outlet offering a variety of South African wines and Beverages at retail prices .Shipping of wines is a further service the off licence offers

Because our function/ Conference venue situated below our accommodation, the property can become quite noisy at times and we recommend that you take this time to take a short walk to our sister Kimbo Lodge Backpackers situated in the Historic Kimberley hotel on the corner of Roeland and Buitenkant street. There we have a , historic local pub and grub, pizzeria and a coffee shop.  The surrounding neighbourhood is also famous for its Boutique Shops, Restaurants, Bars, Coffee shops (Lefties Eatery, Charly’s Bakery(of the Charly’s cake angels tv show fame, New York Bagels and Dias Tavern to name a few) not to mention a choice of Nightclubs-The Dragon lounge, The Assembly ,Mecury Lounge and The Shack .  For those more discerning visitors The Harley Davidson Club of Cape Town is a stones throw away – please enquire at our reception/ travellers desk for more info.

Being at the edge of Cape Town City, the District Six Museum, Cape Towns historic Parliament, Green Market Square, The Castle of Goodhope, Gardens Shopping Mall and Long street that are all in walking distance. Table Mountain Cable Way, The Waterfront, Seapoint and Camps Bay and their beaches are all within a 5 to 15 minutes drive.

Conference Venues

The Conference Room can seat 30 persons in a U-format & 100 persons in a theatre format. Overhead projection, slide projection, wall charts, blackboard & other necessary facilities are catered for & available.

The provision of a Full Conference comprises of a welcome tea/coffee, a mid-morning tea, lunch & an afternoon tea. Dinner can be provided upon request.

The establishment of the Conference Facility has proven to be a great success & the venue has been well used by various NGO’s, Organisations & Sports Clubs,  etc. Sports groups can also use facility for their meetings.

The Sugarhut Lounge /Restaurant and Pizzeria

Is situated on the first floor and is available as a chill spot for our guests on most days unless booked as a private venue

Terms & Conditions

  • Check in is from 14:00 and Check out until 10:00. Let us know if you would like to check in earlier, we will try our best to accommodate you. Late check outs can be arranged where possible, please let us know in advance .Late departure fees may be applicable
  • Children can only be accommodated in a private room or in the Family Room and must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the busy Pub downstairs the  KImbo Lodge is not ideal for children and persons with sensitive and religious views against Alcohol 
  • Children are not allowed to be accommodated in dormitories unless whole dorm is booked by group of children accompanied by a adult.
  • Prepayment:
    50% of the total value of the booking will be charged before the arrival date. Remainder to be settled upon check in. Upfront total payments will be taken for one and two day bookings
  • within 30 days before arrival date.
  • Certain hi demand peeriods such as Easter Christmas etc will  require full prepayment
  • When booking a tour a deposit will be taken at the time of reservation, to confirm the booking. The balance will be payable directly to the guide on the day of the excursion.

If cancelled up to 30 days before date of arrival, no fee will be charged. If cancelled 29-7 days before date of arrival, 50% of the total price of the reservation will be charged. If cancelled later or in the case of a no show, the total price of the reservation will be charged.
